However, in the case of Across the Nightingale Floor, the style just can't make up for the plot. (The "break" you mention is a very good idea, btw - just last month I've decided to put fantasy aside for some time, and to be honest, it's a relief.)

@may: tnx for the comment. :)Trinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00774906919092281518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-700851155622035345.post-14256473756230496292008-03-21T01:26:00.000+01:002008-03-21T01:26:00.000+01:00I found this series enchanting; they may be deriva...I found this series enchanting; they may be derivative, but I still enjoyed them very much.

mayAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-700851155622035345.post-29531800414440668812008-03-20T00:48:00.000+01:002008-03-20T00:48:00.000+01:00When you read enough of a genre it's all pretty pr...When you read enough of a genre it's all pretty predictable. That's part of what makes genre "genre". I think the surprise is more in how it's put together. And to be honest, I can read an utterly predictable book and enjoy it far more than the most edgy writing out there if it's put together well and involves me in the story and the other doesn't do that.

Whenever I find a type of writing getting too familiar I tend to take a "break" and read something different for a while to open my eyes to something different. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-700851155622035345.post-56926209316209482232008-03-18T12:59:00.000+01:002008-03-18T12:59:00.000+01:00@madmax: that's what I meant when I said 'taking t...@madmax: that's what I meant when I said 'taking the first steps' :) I was pretty much the same at the age of 13. The flaws are pretty disturbing once you look back on the book, but the 'moments' are what keeps you reading and makes the reading experience below average, but not really bad. So it's something in-between, and I gave it 1.5 :)

@thrinidir: tnx :)Trinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00774906919092281518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-700851155622035345.post-74581179969672540932008-03-17T18:19:00.000+01:002008-03-17T18:19:00.000+01:00nice :)nice :)ThRiNiDiRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11235487104345529619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-700851155622035345.post-28109960243662143972008-03-17T18:18:00.000+01:002008-03-17T18:18:00.000+01:00I'm a bit confused. You said that the book is well written and that it may satisfy the undemanding reader but lacks something more for it to be a really good book; but you still gave it only one and a half?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
